Out for the Day!

3-colour lithograph, 14 x 20 in, 2023.

Out for the Day explore items and belongings as representations of a thing: a person, a friendship, a feeling, a moment in time, etc. In depicting a vast collection of objects I am very much inspired by “I Spy” and “Where’s Waldo” books for their crowded display of people and trinketry.

Things started out with me wanting to make many little drawings together in one piece. It then evolved into the idea of a big collection of items that I think would be convenient to fit in my pocket so I can have it all the time, like a hammerspace. The other day I forgot to buy kidney beans at the grocery store for my chili… sure would be nice to have them in my pocket at all times in case of major emergencies like that... The collection of objects represents hints to the identity of the portrayed character, what she likes to do and eat, but also inevitably ends up reflecting my own life a little bit. Maybe whatever or whoever’s inside the hammerspace have built their own little functioning world within.
